Bella Band is not a garment; it’s an accessory that will soon be a maternity wardrobe staple. Bella Band is made of a soft nylon/ spandex blend for a snug yet comfortable fit, smoothing out bulky unfastened closures or excessive fabric. It allows pre-pregnancy clothes to be worn longer and maternity clothes sooner; as the band disguises unzipped and unbuttoned waistlines and transforms bulky, cumbersome fabric to create a smooth belly surface for hip, form fitting apparel. It can be worn concealed, or let it peek out from under shirts and tops for that hip, layered look. If exposed, the Bella Band looks like a t-shirt or camisole -- not a funky mechanism to expand the waistband or hold up pants. It is a one-size-fits-most accessory and is currently available in black and white, with new colors including Bella Rosa, Bella Grass, Bella Aqua, Bella Latte and Bella Pink launching in March 2004.
Ingrid Carney was inspired to create the line after recognizing a void in her own wardrobe while pregnant with her daughter Isabel. “There is nothing more frustrating than being slightly too big for pre-pregnancy clothes and yet too small for maternity. I loved my transition wear, but it wasn’t enough!" says Ingrid.
Bella Band originated in San Francisco and is now available at the finest boutiques in the Bay area including Dress on Chestnut Street, Day One on California Street, Moms the Word and Maternity at Annies on Sacramento Street, Moms the Word in Walnut Creek, Glow Girl on Throckmorton Avenue in Mill Valley, and in Southern California at Mom’s the Word on Montana Avenue in Santa Monica and on Ventura Blvd in Studio City. In addition to the west’s Village Maternity in Seattle, Washington, news quickly spread to Chicago were you can purchase at Swell and to the East Coast where Bella Band can be found at Belly and Trimesters in Philadelphia, PA and at Bellies & Buttons in Bonita Springs, Florida.
